Clicker Training Basics

Step 2 - Clicker Training Basics

Clear, Positive Training from Raw Feeding Plus

Clicker training is one of the most effective ways to teach your dog using clear communication and positive reinforcement.

At Raw Feeding Plus, we use clicker‑based methods supported by over 20 years’ experience, helping dogs learn confidently without fear or force.

What Is Clicker Training?

Clicker training is a system that uses a marker signal to tell your dog the exact moment they have done something right.

That marker can be:

  • A clicker (a small handheld tool that makes a clear “click” sound)
  • A marker word such as “Yes”

The marker is always followed by a reward. This teaches your dog:

“That action worked — do it again.”

Over time, your dog begins to repeat behaviours that earn rewards, making learning faster and easier.

Why Clicker Training Works

  • Clear timing – marks the exact moment of correct behaviour
  • Consistency – the sound is always the same
  • Positive learning – focuses on success, not mistakes
  • Builds confidence – dogs learn without fear or pressure

This method removes guesswork and helps dogs understand exactly what is expected of them.

Clicker or “Yes”?

Both a physical clicker and a marker word work in the same way.

  • Clicker: More precise and consistent, ideal for learning new behaviours
  • “Yes”: Convenient and useful when hands‑free

Many owners use both — a clicker for structured training and “Yes” in everyday situations.

Getting Started Step by Step

Step 1: Teach the Marker (Charging the Clicker)

Before training begins, your dog must learn that the marker predicts a reward.

  • Click or say “Yes”
  • Immediately give a treat
  • Repeat 10–15 times
  • No behaviour is required yet

This creates a clear connection: marker = reward.

Step 2: Mark the Behaviour

Once your dog understands the marker:

  • Wait for a behaviour you like (e.g. sitting calmly)
  • Mark the exact moment with a click or “Yes”
  • Immediately give a reward

Timing is key — the marker tells your dog exactly which action earned the reward.

Step 3: Build Simple Skills

Start with easy, natural behaviours:

  • Eye contact
  • Sit
  • Hand touch
  • Calm standing

Reward small steps and gradually build more complex behaviours.

Step 4: Keep Sessions Short and Positive

  • Train for 1–3 minutes at a time
  • End on a success
  • Keep the experience calm and enjoyable

Training Tips for Success

  • One click or “Yes” always = one reward
  • Mark first, reward second
  • Ignore mistakes — reward correct choices
  • Be consistent with your timing

Clicker training is about guiding your dog towards success, not correcting errors.

Clicker Training and Rewards

The quality of your treats has a direct impact on your dog’s focus, motivation, and learning ability.

Using appropriate, nutritious rewards helps keep training calm and effective.

Add Play to Support Training

Training works best when combined with interactive play and enrichment. This keeps your dog mentally engaged and helps reinforce positive behaviour.

Start Simple and Stay Consistent

Small, regular training sessions using clear communication and the right rewards will lead to steady, confident progress.
